DNA Applications:
Personal Identification
- Children: DNA offers a
tremendous advantage over less reliable means of identification
such as footprints or fingerprints which are constantly changing
in children under 7 years of age. Unlike photos and physical
descriptions, DNA is the only portrait that never changes. DNA
identification analysis can identify one person in billions.
- Adults: The DNA of a
missing adult stricken with Alzheimer's disease or other
disorienting condition could provide the positive proof of
identification leading to a safe return.
Relationship Testing
- DNA identification analysis can
be used to determine paternity and/or maternity for newborn
identification, custody disputes, and adoption confirmation.
- Twins can be tested to verify
whether they are monozygous (identical) or dizygous (fraternal).
DNA Legacy
- Every day, more discoveries are
made about DNA and the genetic basis for disease. By preserving
DNA samples, future generations may be able to test for genetic
mutations that are inherited. Knowing this information can allow
family members to modify their lifestyle, undergo preventive
measures, or take advantage of new therapies.
- When doing estate planning, DNA
identification analysis can ensure that, when the time comes,
the rightful heirs inherit an estate.
